FAQ

Common questions.

From sink mounts to sealing schedules — here’s what we hear most often. Can’t find your answer? Call us or send a note above.

General

Do I need an appointment to visit your showroom?
It is recommended to call ahead to ensure we are available to assist you in this very important decision.
What is the difference between an undermount and a top mount sink?
A top mount sink is the traditional style that drops in with its rim resting on the countertop surface. An undermount sink attaches beneath the countertop, allowing you to wipe directly into the sink.
What is Quartz?
Quartz surfaces are manufactured from up to 93% quartz and high-quality polymer resins and pigments that are compacted into slabs.
What is Quartzite?
A metamorphic rock that started out as sandstone. Though softer than granite, it is selected for its distinctive character.
Will this be a messy process?
Some dust is generated when drilling, but installers work to keep your home tidy. For safety, work boots must be worn during installation.

Installation

What is a template?
A template is a pattern made of your future countertops that will be used to produce your countertop to your specifications.
What are your lead times?
Lead times vary — we recommend discussing this with our representatives, who will try to accommodate you however possible.
What information do I need for an estimate?
Required details include personal contact information (name, address, phone, fax, and/or email), area dimensions, sink type (top mount vs. undermount), and the material name if chosen. Submissions can be made via the Request a Quote form, fax, email, or in person.

Countertop Maintenance

How often do I need to seal my stone countertops?
Sealing should occur at minimum once yearly, though frequency may increase based on stone type and how heavily it is used.
How do I clean my countertops?
We suggest using specialized stone cleaners — and we sell such a product. Call for details.
How do I know if I need to seal my granite?
Try sprinkling water on the surface. If the water soaks into the stone and does not bead up, then we would recommend resealing your granite. Most kitchens require annual resealing.
Can I set hot things on my stone countertops?
No — we advise against placing hot items like pots directly on any countertop.

Choosing a Countertop

How can I determine my real bottom line cost?
Pricing factors include: square footage; edge profile; layout; fancy details; type of sink; drilling to accommodate hardware; and stove/cooktop.

Product Information

Will my countertop have a seam?
Seams are sometimes unavoidable due to slab size and bonding constraints. We handle placement aesthetically, though color matching at seams is not always achievable because of shading and grain variation.
How is the seam placement determined on my stone countertops?
We decide based on the countertop layout, with job site access (hallways, elevators) also influencing placement.
Where do the stone products come from?
The stone products come from quarries all over the world.
What is the advantage of Natural stone?
Granite is considered the top natural countertop surface, offering a unique appearance that cannot be duplicated.
What is Etching?
Marble and limestone react with acidic substances. Even mild acids (fruit juice, wine, vinegar, certain cleaners) can dull the finish, while extended or stronger contact may carve depressions into the surface. We may be able to help repair such damage.
